:: The Balinese spirit god depicted in this beautiful little (7" x 9.5") tempera painting is called a barong. The artist is uknown. A muted mat with a small elegant gold leaf frame and black sides will create a perfect setting for this ritual dance performance.

:: This is one of the most unusual objects I have had in the shop. It's a photo of my client's Swiss grandmother, printed onto porcelain. Only 3" high, it is 100 years old and was taken from a headstone from a Swiss cemetery to bring back to America. Her fresh face has such a contemporary look! It will go into a sunken mount in a natural linen mat, with a small moulding which has a hand-carved look.
:: Jacob Lawrence's powerful 1977 lithograph "Carpenters" was a treat to frame. It's from his last great "Builders" series. As a young boy, Lawrence watched local carpenters and cabinetmakers in Harlem. Decades later he wrote: "The Builders came from my own observations of the human condition. I like the symbolism, I think of it as a man's aspiration, as a constructive tool-man building." I matted the print with a wide creamy 8-ply mat and framed it with a handsome walnut frame and non-reflective museum glass.
